Bridge Over Troubled Squidguts is the thirty-third (thirty-first in the English dub) episode of the Medabots anime.
Content[]
Summary[]
Koji asked Dr. Aki to teach him the Medaforce. However, Koji is told that unless he has a Rare Medal, he will not be able to draw out the Medaforce. Space Medafighter X appears in front of the downcast Koji and tells him that there is a way to counter opponents that wield the Medaforce without using a Rare Medal.
Plot[]
Koji feels he has no chance against Ikki since Metabee can summon the Medaforce. Space Medafighter X agrees to show Koji just how to beat that force.
Meanwhile, the Rubberobo Gang has put Squidguts in charge of taking Metabee's Rare Medal. He has planted himself on a pedestrian bridge, making anyone who wishes to pass Robattle his Medabot Gobanko. A loss to Gobanko would mean the loser must give up his Medal. Even Coach Mountain and Digmole couldn't defeat him.
Karin, who is looking to share the spicy squid dumplings she prepare with Ikki, approaches the bridge and tries to do everything she can to keep everyone happy. First she has a crosswalk built so everyone can pass, and then she sets up a Grand Prix so the pedestrian bridge can be used to show how important it is, with Metabee finding the bridge amazing. Finally, Ikki arrives and sees the cause of the problems is Squidguts and a Robattle is called.
Metabee's double launch missiles are blocked by Gobanko, who then wraps Metabee in a chain and causes massive damage to his head and torso. In addition, Metabee's Missiles are inoperative. Suddenly, Metabee notices there is damage to the precious bridge, and as Gobanko does not care about what he did, Metabee got angry and summons the Medaforce, defeating Gobanko, but also causing heavy damage to the bridge.
After the Robattle, Rintaro races up to Ikki and informs him of Space Medafighter X's intention to help Koji. Ikki wonders if there really is a way to defeat the Medaforce.
Trivia[]
- As the Medabot Metabee faces on this episode is Gobanko, this episode has references to Benkei:
- Mr. Referee is dressed like Ushiwakamaru, who defeated Benkei on the Gojo Bridge.
- Gobanko is fought on a pedestrial bridge.
- In the Japanese version, Squidguts said he has 99 Medals, and his next opponent would be his 100th Medal, a reference to Benkei collecting 999 weapons, with Ushiwakamaru's being his 1000th if he had won.
- The tire from one of the racing cars has Bee Train written on it, which is the animation studio that produced the Medabots anime.
- Gobanko has more dialogue in this episode.
In the episode[]
- Ikki and Metabee won Gobanko's left arm.
Background[]
English dub changes[]

Recruit Mate

Coach Mountain

Caviar
- Several dialogues were changes in this episode, and additional dialogues were added, with some of the changes making the episode more humorous. For example, in the original Squidguts makes several mentions about work, as he was considering quitting the Rubberobo Gang to find other job, but changed his mind when he heard Karin talking about the bridge, feeling motivated to continue.
- Also, Squidguts said that Coach Mountain's Medal would be his 100th after defeating him, and he says the same thing to Ikki. Gobanko says that he already said that and that his count is wrong, and Squidguts says he was lying about the count. In the end he is seen dropping only 16 Medals after his defeat.
- Squidguts reading a magazine during the Rubberobo Gang's reunion was cut.
- Seaslug crying was cut.
- The close up of the magazine Squidguts was reading, Recruit Mate (リクルートメイト, a play on "recruitment") Vol. 159, as well as the scenes where he looks at it, shakes his head, and throws it into the garbage, were cut. In the original, Squidguts said he was doing this for many years, and should not consider changing his job.
- In the dub, the cat Karin talked with was named Creampuff.
- The contents from the takoyaki (called octopus balls in Love At First Bite) Karin prepared are different. In the dub, Karin said that they are mediterranean-style extra spicy squid dumplings, made with fiery herbs and spices and stuff, caviar eel, cayenne peppers, and not a single bit of squid that she prepared in the cooking class. In the original, Karin prepared them in Home Economics and says that she used several spices, olive oil, and caviar.
- The medal transition in Ikki's school was replaced by a fadeout.
- Part of Coach Mountain's dialogue was cut. His lines are also different, such as him mentioning he is 23 years old.
- The eyecatches were replaced by a fadeout.
- The narrator's explanation about what caviar is after Karin gave the takoyaki to Ikki was cut. The narrator informed that it is one of the most expensive foods in the world, and due to this Ikki's family rarely has a chance to eat it.
- A fadeout was added after Squidguts reveals his real name and returns to the bridge.
- The text in Metabee's Medawatch changed. The name of his four parts were replaced by Head, Left Arm, Right Arm, and Missiles, the position of his arms being swapped, and the texts in the bottom, "Missile damaged 60 pt", "Danger!" and "Range of operation down", were replaced by "Damage to head and torso" and "Missiles inoperative".
