Once a Medafighter (2) is the 16th episode of Medabots Spirit.

Content[]

Summary[]

Ginkai had no choice but to betray Kam. Ginkai's Unitrix is attacked by Kam's stronger Redrun, and Unitrix is incapacitated. Ginkai holds back his sadness and bids farewell to Unitrix.

Plot[]

Continuing from the previous episode, Ginkai sends Unitrix to battle Redrun to protect Metabee's Medal, but Unitrix gets slaughtered. The Mystery Medafighter then appears and sends Roks to battle Redrun. Roks disables Redrun and Kam retreats, but not before making a vow that Ginkai will pay for his betrayal, being his enemy from this time on.

Seeing that both Medafighters can't continue the Robattle, Dr. Aki declares the tournament a tie and allows both Ikki and Ginkai to take either Arcbeetle Dash or Tyrelbeetle, but Ikki declines saying that Ginkai would have easily beaten him, so Ginkai gets to keep both Medabots.

Later, at Ms. Nae's shop, she checks the extension of the damage caused by Redrun and says that Metabee may be fine, but Unitrix was damaged beyond repair, and Ginkai laments the loss, burying Unitrix.

Medabots Spirit Unitrix grave

Unitrix's grave.

While Ginkai is grieving Unitrix's loss and wonders what he will do next, as he lost his Kilobot, Kam will want revenge for his betrayal, and he was too prideful to ask for Ikki's help, but how will he face Kam without a trusty friend? The Mystery Medafighter appears and says that Ginkai showed that he was a honorable person in the tournament, asking why he was working for someone ruthless like Kam. Ginkai explains that he used to be a Medafighter with a Bayonet. They were good friends, but they also argued a lot, like Ikki and Metabee. While participating in an official Robattle tournament in the last year, they got into a fierce argument before the finals, and Ginkai got so upset that he lost it. Ginkai removed Bayonet's Medal and buried it, and as he did not go to the tournament, he lost by default, blaming Bayonet for that. At that time, Kam appeared saying that it was a pity that Ginkai lost, as he could have easily won the tournament, and offered a Kilobot for him, Desperado, in exchange of his friendship.

Ginkai was tempted by Kam's offer, as Kam said that Kilobots are better than the childish Medabots because they lack emotions and follow orders without question, not following rules, and the result of a battle would depend only on the Medafighter's skill instead of the teamwork with the Medabot, but now he realizes that Kam was only using him, and he should have always been a fair Medafighter. The Mystery Medafighter is glad that Ginkai realized it, telling Ginkai that he was now free to decide what he will do from now on on his own instead of following someone else.

At night, Redrun's repairs are complete, and Kam tests Redrun in a Robattle against his own Exor, destroying him and saying that it was only a warm up for Ginkai.

In the next day, Metabee is repaired, but he lost his memory, Nae believing that Redrun's attacks may have cut off some of his neurotransmitters, and Ikki is upset with this. While thinking on what he should do, Ginkai remembers his friendship with Bayonet and he runs to retrieve Bayonet's Medal, finding it in the same spot he buried. Kam appears to challenge Ginkai as payback for his betrayal, and Ginkai accepts the challenge, telling Kam to wait a moment.

Ginkai forgive Arch-Dash

Ginkai reunites with Bayonet, who is now Arc-Dash.

Ginkai returns home and searches for Bayonet's body, but his sister reminds him that Bayonet was gifted to their cousin. Ginkai then decides to place Bayonet's Medal on the recently acquired Arcbeetle Dash, and explains everything to his old friend, apologizing, and they reconcile. Bayonet, now renamed Arc-Dash, agrees to help Ginkai Robattle against Kam and Redrun.

Despite Arcbeetle Dash being one of the strongest Medabots from the Medabot Corporation, Redrun is too much for him. The Mystery Medafighter appears to help again, which upsets Ginkai as this was his fight. However, this time Roks is easily defeated, and Redrun would have destroyed his Medal if Arc-Dash had not saved it. The Mystery Medafighter then asks Ginkai to lend him the Medawatch for Tyrelbeetle. At first Ginkai is against it as he wants a fair one-on-one Robattle, but the Mystery Medafighter convinces him by saying that this was not a normal Robattle, their Medabots were risking their lives to stop a powerful monster. However, even with Arc-Dash and Tyrelbeetle together, Redrun easily overwhelms them until a new command appears on the Medawatches: Meda-Combo. With no options left, they try it, and both Arc-Dash and Tyrelbettle combine to form Masterbeetle and defeat Redrun causing Kam to retreat while vowing revenge again. Ginkai thanks the Mystery Medafighter and tells him that he can keep Tyrelbeetle, as Arc-Dash is his partner and the only Medabot he needs.

At the end Ginkai goes to talk with Ikki, who was trying to make Metabee recover his memories. Metabee is clueless as to what's going on until Arc-Dash smacks his head, the strong impact restoring his memory. Metabee becomes his old self, and Ginkai returned being a true Medafighter instead of a rogue one.

Trivia[]

  • This is the last episode in the series to use cel animation, changing to digital animation in following episodes.
  • There is an animation error in Arc-Dash's arm when he first attacks Redrun. When he rises his arm, a part that is supposed to be off-screen appears briefly, showing that the arm is incomplete.
  • It is unclear why Unitrix is considered gone and buried, and Metabee got amnesia, when their Medals were not even touched by Redrun. Nae did not mention any damage to their Medals, only that the electrical circuits from Unitrix's body was damaged beyond repair, with Medabots Spirit implying that the body parts also affect the Medal, which is the mind and soul of a Medabot. If the Medal was not damaged, Ginkai only needed to replace the broken body parts, like he did by placing Bayonet's Medal on Arcbeetle Dash in the same episode. While the show never informed if a Kilobot's Ex Medal would work on a Medabot body (like Arcbeetle Dash and Tyrelbeetle), Ginkai also had several spare Kilobot parts, like the ones he used with Sherwood and Locknex, the several boxes he won in the previous episode, and he later showed his remaining Kilobot parts to Samantha in It's the Medafighter Way!.
    • However, if Unitrix had survived, even with his own body, it is likely that Ginkai would stick with him instead of considering searching for Bayonet, which would end with him being defeated by Kam again, as only the power of Masterbeetle was able to defeat Redrun.
      • It is also unclear why the Demolition Mode from Roks was able to incapacitate Redrun, as during the series, excluding Gryphon and the fair Robattle against Metabee in Poor, Miss Nae (which was a close call), Redrun was only shown losing when facing at least two strong opponents together, showing no signs of damage when hit by Metabee's strongest attack on Demolition Mode in Redrun Away and the fights that happened in Roks Reborn. Roks also never used the same attack against Redrun again.

Background[]

English dub changes[]

Medabots Spirit Redrun - He is enemy B

Redrun's HUD.

Medabots Spirit Medawatch Redrun

Redrun's Medawatch screen.

Medabots Spirit episode 16 fight 1

Ikki and Metabee fighting.

Medabots Spirit episode 16 fight 2

Ginkai and Bayonet fighting.

  • Most appearances of the text Medarot were editted into Medabot.
  • Redrun gained extra lines in the dub, such as saying "no mercy" several times during the fight against Exor. Redrun also growls more often in the dub.
  • The text "he is enemy!!" in Redrun's HUD was replaced by "worthy opponent".
  • The parts where Ikki and Ginkai are with their eyes closed and Redrun beats Unitrix were shortened a little bit.
  • "Meda-Shears", the attack used by Roks in his Demolition Mode, was translated as "electro disk". Of note, in the dub it was later called Meda-Shears in Winner Take All.
  • Redrun's Medawatch was redesigned, and the scene showing it was zoomed.
  • Ginkai calling Unitrix after placing his Medal back on his body was shortened a bit.
  • An eyecatch was added after Ginkai starts crying and hugs Unitrix's lifeless body in Nae's shop.
  • Like the first episode, the muzzle on Desperado's head was removed.
  • While Metabee has amnesia despite being fully repaired, in the dub, Nae believes that Redrun's attacks may have cut off some of his neurotransmitters, while in the original, Nae does not understand why he is like that as his memory integrated circuit appears to be working normally.
  • Some parts from Nae's shop after Ikki learns that Metabee has amnesia were cut. Ikki holds Nae's clothes and begs her to fix Metabee, asking if she was not a genius capable of fixing any Medabot. Honey scolds Ikki for taking out his anger on Miss Nae, saying that she stayed up all night trying to do everything she could to repair Metabee.
  • An eyecatch was added after Ikki, Metabee, Erika, and Brass leave Nae's shop.
  • Ikki and Metabee fighting was cut, skipping from Ginkai opening his eyes while laying on the grass (due to remembering Bayonet in the dub) to the next part with him searching for Bayonet's Medal in the forest. In the original, Ginkai opened his eyes due to listening Erika screaming for Ikki and Metabee to stop fighting. Ginkai arrives and asks Erika what happened, and she tells him that Metabee lost his memory. Ikki is crying while punching Metabee, asking him how could he forget their friendship and emotions so easily, and Metabee says that it is not his fault that he cannot remember, fighting back. Erika tells them to stop as they are best friends, and Ikki complains that without his memory, Metabee is as good as dead, and the one in front of him was not him, but a stranger. Their fight made Ginkai remember a fight he had with Bayonet, the two punching each other while Ginkai's sister asked them to stop. Bayonet was also his best friend, someone he could trust from the bottom of his heart. While Ginkai was lost in thought, Erika asks him to stop their fight, and he complies. After separating Ikki and Metabee, Ginkai thanks them, saying that they made him remember someone who he can trust, and Ginkai walks away, leaving the others confused with what he said.
  • Arcbeetle Dash's arm parts, Scatter and Sprinkle, were renamed as Scatter Bolt and Hailstorm, despite the names being shown before in Metabee's Out of Body Experience, both on Arcbeetle Dash's HUD and on Ikki's Medawatch.
  • Redrun's Crust Shield was changed to Lower Shield.
  • In the Robattle between Redrun and Arc-Dash, the terms Reckless Mode and Mighty Reckless Mode were both mistakenly changed to Demolition Mode, which is the localized name of Crafty Mode. When the Mystery Medafighter later ordered Tyrelbeetle to use Mighty Reckless Mode, it was simplified to Action Mode, the localization of the normal Reckless Mode.
  • An eyecatch was added after Roks appears to help Arc-Dash, replacing the following scene showing Kam's reaction.
  • Redrun's unnamed bite attack while in Action Mode was named "shock bite" in the dub.
  • Meda-Combo is known as Meda-Unite in Japanese. This is reflected on the messages "Unite with Tyrrellbeetle" and "Unite with Arcbeetle-Dash" shown on the Medawatch screens.
