A Robattle (ロボトル Robotoru, romanized as Robottle in earlier Japanese media) is a popular activity in the Medabots franchise in which two teams compete against each other with Medabots in a battle.
Games[]
In most games, each team consists of one Medafighter and up to three Medabots. The Medabots from each side start on the Command Line (コマンドライン) in the corners of the field, where they are given orders by their Medafighters. After a Medabot receives a command, the Medabot will move toward the Active Line (アクティブライン) in the center of the field, representing the Medabot charging the attack. After reaching the line and performing the commanded action, the Medabot will return to the Command Line, representing the cooldown time. This repeats until the opponent is defeated.
Usually, only the opponent's leader Medabot needs to be defeated, but some battles require the defeat of all opposing Medabots. The winner is the Medafighter whose Medabots causes the opponent's to cease function first by destroying the head parts, or that caused more damage before the time limit. After a Robattle, the Medals from Medabots will gain experience, leving up. With a few exceptions, the winner gains a random part from one of the opponent's Medabots.
The rules and some details vary depending of the game, such as Medarot DS having a vertical field instead of the usual horizontal. In Medarot 3and 4, the field is octagonal and has a hexagon in the center, the Command Line and Active Line being replaced by the similar Charge Area and Action Point, and the field has effects that activate periodically during Robattles.
In the games Medabots AX, Medarot G, Medarot Dual and Medarot Girls Mission, Robattles are limited to two Medabots per team. In the former two each Medafighter has two Medabots, while in the latter two each Medabot is controlled by a different Medafighter. In Medabots Infinity, Robattles are one-on-one.
Other media[]
In the anime and manga, Robattles are usually one-on-one, but each team can officially have two or three Medafighters and Medabots, such as the matches from the World Robattle Cup in the anime. There are also cases of one Medafighter using two or more Medabots, but this appears to not be common outside the games, specially in the anime as the only ones who Robattled like this were the Rubberobo Gang members and the Mystery Medafighter. If the Medafighters engage in a submission match instead of a standard match, the winner of a Robattle gets to take a Medapart from the Medabot of the loser for keeps.
In the anime[]
Robattles officially sanctioned by the Medabot rules committee are always monitored by a referee, with Mr. Referee often appearing in Robattles from Ikki's town and its surroundings. If no referee is present, the match is not considered official by the committee and the result is not considered for the Medafighter ranking. Depending on the participants, a Robattle without a referee may take in no rules.[1] In Medabots Spirit, a referee (a Crow Tengu) only appeared in the Robattle tournament from the episode Once a Medafighter (1). Rogue Medafighters and their Kilobots do not respect the rules, and they may even destroy their opponents after winning a match.
Besides taking down the opposing Medabot's head part, a match can be won if the opponent is in no condition to continue the Robattle for some reason, such as getting stuck and unable to gain stance. For example, Metabee lost against Sharkkan due to getting seasick and unable to continue in The Old Man and the Sea Monster, and Snowbro surrended after getting stuck on snow in Once Frostbitten, Twice Shy.
