Who is the Mystery Medafighter?! is the third episode of Medabots Spirit.

Content[]

Summary[]

Kam carried out a simultaneous attack on all Medabots by his Kilobots. When Erika was about to be attacked by Kilobots, a mysterious Medafighter with a Medabot named Roks appeared and defeated the Kilobots in an instant.

Plot[]

Kam wants Kilobots to saturate the market, which would eventually make Medabots obsolete. So Kam puts a plan into action: He will show that Kilobots are superior by defeating as many Medabots as possible, making Medafighters wish to replace their inferior Medabots. He believes that Kilobots were not meant to Robattle, but to simply win against their opponent by any means.

That morning, Spyke and Krosserdog are out for a run when a couple of Kilobots named Skelbots deliberately take out Krosserdog. In fact, the Skelbots are out destroying all Medabots they encounter. When Erika's Brass is threatened, Ikki and Metabee arrive to help. So does a mysterious boy with his Medabot, Roks. This boy is dressed in a hat and dark cloak so very little of him is exposed. Roks easily defeats the Skelbots, leaving Ikki and Metabee feeling inferior.

After Brass is out of danger (thanks to the cloaked boy), Erika takes a picture of his back when he turns to leave. She is determined to write a story on him, calling him the Mystery Medafighter.

The Screws end up maliciously taking the picture from Erika. They take it to Kam, saying that he can have it if he gives them a special part (flight system) for Peppercat. When the picture actually reveals nothing, Kam has Samantha put posters around the city stating that Ikki wants to challenge the Mystery Medafighter.

Not far off, Ikki and Metabee have run into a new boy and his Medabot. Ikki finds out the boy is going to their school, and his name is Zuru. They both see what Samantha is doing, and it turns out (for his pride's sake) Ikki does want to Robattle the Mystery Medafighter. Many children gather in the meeting point to watch the Robattle, and while the Mystery Medafighter shows up, he says he is not interested as he only fights against Kilobots, explaining a bit about them. Kam shows up to take on the Mystery Medafighter himself, and Ikki is left to fend off Masa and his gang of Skelbots.

As the battles begin, Samantha looks as if she's going to help Ikki... Until Masa gives her a Skelbot leg part as part of their deal. But this turned out to be a good thing since Peppercat couldn't handle the new part and ended up disrupting out at least half of the Skelbots by accident, making it easier for Metabee to handle them.

Meanwhile, Kam and the Mystery Medafighter continue to push their Medabots, despite everyone asking them to stop. As the two would not stop and it started raining, everyone starts leaving. Ikki yells for them to stop, pointing to the Mystery Medafighter that he's no better than the Kilobots since all he wants to do is destroy them at any cost, becoming just like them. The Mystery Medafighter realizes Ikki is right and leaves with Roks. Kam does not understand why his opponent was leaving during their match, as a victor was not decided yet.

A little while later, Miss Nae is informed of the events. She feels relieved when Ikki reassures her that they won't turn out like Kam. Medabots are their friends, not fighting machines. Then Erika says she loves a good story, and she's determined to find out who the Mystery Medafighter is.

Trivia[]

  • The parts Kam equipped on Frontline during the match against Roks are Cutter's left arm and Desperado's head.
  • When Metabee used his head part, he is shown firing eight projectiles in quick succession, but he hits ten Skelbots, showing two additional explosions.
    • Noteworthy, Saikachi's head part has 4 uses in most games, including his debut in Medarot 3, where he fires 2 missiles with each use. If this is the same in the anime, then Metabee would not have enough ammo to fire two extra missiles offscreen.

Background[]

English dub changes[]

Medabots Spirit Screws and a dog

The dog passing in front of the Screws.

Medabots Spirit Screws episode 3

The message behind the Screws.

  • An eyecatch was added after Erika took a picture of the Mystery Medafighter.
  • One part with Kam talking with Masa was shortened, and his dialogue was adapted, cutting the part Kam mentions that the public will prefer fighting without rules instead of Robattles with rules.
  • Skelbot's leg parts are called a Kilobot flight system in the dub, and floating parts in the original.
    • Of note, Skelbot is a multi-legged type Medabot in Medarot R. It is unknown if the change to a floating type in the anime was intentional or a mistake, but it could be related with Skelbot being the first multi-legged Medabot after the floating Medabots in Medarot R's in-game library, alongside its design.
  • The part with a dog passing in front of the Screws while they were crying was cut.
  • An eyecatch was added after the second meeting between the Screws and Kam.
  • Zuru's mention to the school's name, Ginjou Elementary School, was omitted.
  • In the dub, the content from the fake challenge letter the Screws did has the location Doburoku Hill (named after doburoku) replaced by "downtown", and it is less formal:
English Japanese Translation

To the mystery medafighter
who butted in on my robattle!
I'm giving you another chance
to fight, but this time...
against me!
If you're not too chicken
to accept this challenge,
meet me at the old lot
downtown.
Yours Truly,
IKKI

Stop hiding and come have

Pleased to meet you.

Medabots Spirit Frontline Medarotch

Frontline in Kam's Medawatch.

Medabots Spirit Desperado head B

Frontline using Desperado's head part.

  • In the dub, Ikki says that the fake message has awful grammar, bad spelling, and horrible sentence structure, while in the original, Ikki only says that it was poorly written (without specifying the issues) and that he would have written a little better.
  • Two of the three scenes showing the message behind the Screws were changed, likely due to the Japanese text, and the lines were adapted to compensate. The first was replaced by a scene shown before, and the third was cut.
    • In the part with the first view, in the dub Ikki does not know what the Screws are planning, suspecting it to be a trap, but does not care as he wants to challenge the Mystery Medafighter. In the original, Ikki suspects the Screws are doing it because Kam wants to make him face the Mystery Medafighter, but says that only this once, he is thankful for what the Screws are doing, as he actually wants to have a match with the Mystery Medafighter.
    • The second view, visible when Metabee explains why Ikki wants to challenge the Mystery Medafighter, may not have been editted due to being more distant and barely readable. In one point from this part, Ikki says that it will be a battle between men with their pride on the line, while in the dub Ikki says that "if I didn't have my pride, I'd look like a real jerk". Note that in this context the word jerk is used as in foolish, not as obnoxious, as an excessively proud person can be haughty.
    • In the third part, Samantha says that they're now on Ikki's side and will be using Kam, and is happy that their posters will benefit everyone. In the dub, Samantha only says "you're the man Ikki".
  • In a cloudy scene that is silent in original, Metabee says "oh man, I hate gettin' rain on my processors" in the dub.
  • Kam's mention to the name of Cutter's left arm was omitted.
  • An eyecatch was added before Brass appears to help Metabee, and a scene with Ikki was repeated.
  • While Peppercat is flying, in the dub she says she was feeling a little nauseous, while in the original she specifies that she was not accustomed with the new part.
  • The screen from Kam's Medawatch was redesigned, the text "Death Medarot" was replaced by "Frontline", the text "damage" was removed, a percentage symbol was added after the numbers, and all gauge indications were removed.
  • Like previous episodes, Desperado's head part was editted to remove the hole in the barrel, and the scenes where it is used were cut. In the original, its shot hits Roks twice, with the Mystery Medafighter ordering Roks to continue fighting despite taking heavy damage, with Roks struggling and being able to cut the gun's barrel before it fires again. In the dub, Roks comments that it is impressive and cuts the barrel shortly after the part was equipped, not giving the Kilobot the chance of using it.
    • Of note, despite being stated to be a hammer in the first episode, the part's original name, Mega Barrel, was kept in the dub, and a hole can be seen inside the head when the barrel is cut by Roks.
  • After Ikki points out to the Mystery Medafighter that he was no different from Kam and the Kilobots, in the dub, Kam says that Ikki should be ready, as this will be the future of Robattling, and Ikki says that if that becomes true, then he will never Robattle again, as it is not supposed to be like that. In the original, Kam calmly says that they are just having a Robattle, and Ikki says that was no longer a Robattle, as they are just making their Medabots fight each other until one is destroyed.
