Content[]
Summary[]
Worried about the Mystery Medafighter, who had revealed his true identity as Zuru, Nae goes to see Zuru's father, Dr. Maizu. Dr. Maizu insists that he was right in pursuing only strength. Nae asked the doctor to remember the wonderful words he said to Zuru a long time ago.
Plot[]
Continuing from the previous episode, Zuru revealed that he is the Mystery Medafighter, and challenges Kam to protect Arc-Dash. However, Kam leaves, saying that learning his secret identity was already a good victory. Ikki and the others try to talk with Zuru, but he avoids them.
Worried about Zuru, Nae decides to go see his father in Extreme Tech during his lunch break. They remember of the past, with Nae being a fan of Dr. Maizu's research on Medabots and asking him to sign a book he wrote for her. Nae became friends with Zuru during this time, playing together in the Medabot Corporation. Dr. Maizu then asks how Dr. Aki is doing, and he asks Nae to tell Aki that he was right. Nae does not understand, and Dr. Maizu elaborates that Dr. Aki thinks his research is immoral because he wanted to make Medabots more powerful, but Maizu believes that is what kids want, not a friend like Dr. Aki's unreal idealism, but a strong Medabot that gives them the power to defeat any opponent in one hit, and the increased sale of Kilobots is proof that he was right.
During their conversation, they see two Rogue Medafighters force a Medafighter to Robattle with them, their Kilobot easily defeating the Medabot. They order their Kilobot to attack the Medabot after its function ceased, but the Medafighter did not allow it, protecting his Medabot, and the kids leave, mocking the kid for treating the Medabot like a friend. Nae feels sorry for the loser, and Dr. Maizu says that it is natural for a loser to feel humiliated, and he should buy a Kilobot if he wants to avoid losing again. Nae agrees with Dr. Aki, saying that focusing only on strength and winning is no good for children, that Robattles should teach important lessons like friendship and good sportsmanship. Dr. Maizu says Nae is still young to understand how wrong Dr. Aki is, but will eventually understand. While Dr. Maizu is leaving, Nae says that he forgot what he once told his son, and should try to remember it. Dr. Maizu is confused, saying he does not know what she is talking about.
Later, in Extreme Tech, the latest Kilobot, Gryphon, is presented to Kam. Gryphon's right arm is able to force two Unitrixes to defeat themselves, and one hit from his left arm halved the damage gauges from all of Redrun's parts. Gryphon is also able to Medachange, having a powerful Destroy attack able to take down Redrun. Dr. Maizu brags of how easily Gryphon can take down Redrun without even using its full power, as Gryphon is still a prototype and currently has a limiter due to the use of its full power causing Gryphon to overheat and break down, but that issue will eventually be solved. Kam is quite satisfied with the results, and he asks if he can lend Gryphon for a while to play with him, with Dr. Maizu agreeing.
In Nae's workshop, Ikki, Metabee, and Erika appear looking for Zuru, as he did not appear in school and Zuru's mother does not know where he went. Nae says she did not see him, and asks what they will talk with him if they find him, and if they can forgive him. Ikki is not sure, as he feels betrayed for Zuru keeping that secret from him, but Erika teases Ikki by saying that he is looking for Zuru because he is worried with him. After they leave to search somewhere else, Nae tells Zuru that it safe for him to stop hiding, and he thanks Nae. Zuru receives a message from Kam challenging him to a match with his newest Kilobot. Nae is worried with Zuru, but Zuru tells her to not worry, because he will go there as himself, not as the Mystery Medafighter, and thanks her for talking with his father, saying that he too needs to have a serious talk with him after the match. Nae is happy to hear this, and says she will help him, sending a message to Dr. Maizu.
While working, two researchers ask Dr. Maizu if it is alright to let Kam play with Gryphon, as it is too powerful, to the point that the upper management is showing disapproval for turning it into a product. Dr. Maizu says it should not be a problem, and tells them to return to work. Dr. Maizu starts feeling troubled, remembering Nae's words and the Robattle he saw earlier, and tried to remember what he told his son in the past, but shrugs it off, saying that he is right. He then receives a message from Nae, who wants to talk with him about Zuru.
Ikki and Ginkai heard about the match and finally manage to talk with Zuru while he was heading to the meeting point. Zuru tells them to leave him alone, and Ikki is upset with his behavior, but Ginkai tells him that they can at least watch the match and be there in case Kam tries one of his tricks. Kam arrives and shows his latest Kilobot, Gryphon. Before the match starts, Nae warns Zuru that she heard about a Kilobot whose development was likely to be stopped due to it being too powerful, and that Gryphon could be it.
While working, Dr. Maizu thinks about the recent events and suddenly got worried, as if realizing something may not be right, and decides to go to the place Nae told him. There, he sees that Zuru and Kam are having a Robattle, with Kam using Gryphon, and Nae tells him about how Zuru feels that Kilobots changed his father, hating them for that.
Despite their best efforts, Gryphon's power is overwhelming for Roks and Tyrelbeetle, with Roks losing half of his energy and Tyrelbeetle being defeated. Zuru considers giving up, but Roks says that they will not know if they can win if they don't try, asking to at least try. Seeing Zuru and Roks talking, Dr. Maizu remembered what he told Zuru years ago. Kam informs that was not even Gryphon's full power, and he decides to release Gryphon's limiter, which surprises Dr. Maizu. Maizu warns Kam to not do that, with both Zuru and Kam only now noticing that he was present. Kam tells him to not worry, as Gryphon is only a prototype and it is fine if he breaks down, saying that it will be a good test to help him improve Kilobots, and Kam does not understand why Maizu is concerned, as he was the one who wanted to create the strongest Kilobot.
As Gryphon prepares to use his Destroy attack at max power, Dr. Maizu informs Zuru that Gryphon cannot move while charging, being his only chance to stop him. Hearing his father, Zuru and Roks manage to make Gryphon miss the attack, and the Kilobot overheats and breaks down. Kam laments that he lost, and Dr. Maizu says he will not finish Gryphon. Disappointed, Kam leaves, and Eddie silently apologizes to everyone.
Dr. Maizu talks with Zuru, apologizing for not realizing his mistakes, also asking Nae to tell Dr. Aki that he was right about him. Dr. Maizu tells his son that, while he believed he was thinking about the kids, in truth, all he was thinking about was satisfying his own desire as a researcher to make the most advanced Medabot, and did not realize that this eventually would result in dangerous machines, and that he was putting his work above his precious son. Dr. Maizu then tells the words he had forgotten, "winning isn't everything", and Zuru starts crying, hugging his father, grateful that he returned being like he used to be. Everyone gets emotive with the scene, and Erika takes a picture of the moment.
Trivia[]
- The Medal shaped coin tossed by Eddie is the same type of coin seen in Rough on a Hot Tin Cat.
In the episode[]
Background[]
English dub changes[]

Dr. Maizu's book.

Death Medarot screens.

Part of Kam's message.

Nae's message.
- Most of Metabee's lines in this episode were replaced by jokes, such as Metabee asking details about Zuru's disguise and saying that Kam has bad breath.
- Some scenes from the recap were cut, and Zuru's last line in the recap is different from the previous episode in the dub.
- Zuru's first line after the recap in the original is him challenging Kam, saying that he can even have Minitora and Kintora assist him if he wishes. In the dub, Zuru says he is more confortable with his disguise.
- Ginkai talking with Ikki and Metabee after Zuru left was cut.
- The title from the book written by Dr. Maizu while he was in the Medabot Corporation, メダロットの基礎工学 ("The Fundamentals of Medarot Engineering"), was changed to "The Fundamentals of Robotics - How to Make the Most Of Robattling". The text 著・大空マイヅル ("Author: Oozora Maizuru") was translated as "By Dr. Maizu Zora", and the small text in the bottom (possibly the publishing company) was left untranslated.
- Some scenes from the Robattle between Pass-Ghoul and Stingaray were shortened, such as the part the Rogue Medafighters challenge the Medafighter, and a scene where Pass-Ghoul punches Stingaray 5 times in the original and 3 times in the dub.
- After Stingaray is down and Akegarasu orders Pass-Ghoul to attack, the position from two scenes changed, and one was cut, reducing its seriousness. In the original, Pass-Ghoul runs to attack (as ordered), the Medafighter is surprised by this and runs to protect Stingaray while telling them to stop, and Nae and Maizu are surprised (implying they are worried with the kid's safety for running in the direction of an attacking Kilobot). In the dub, the scene with the kid running was cut, Nae and Maizu surprised is shown first (their reaction being for the order to attack a downed opponent), and Pass-Ghoul runs to attack.
- A small scene only showing a leaf was cut.
- The luminosity of Dr. Maizu's flashback when Nae tells him to remember what he told Zuru changed, being brighter in the original and darker in the dub.
- An eyecatch was added after the conversation between Dr. Maizu and Nae.
- The text Death Medarot (Kilobot) was removed from alls screens showing the status of Unitrix, Redrun, and Gryphon.
- The action from Gryphon's right arm is said to give control over the enemy's weapons in the original, and is said to make all weapons from the opponent expire in the dub.
- The sound effects from shots in this part was removed from the dub, making it look like the effect from Gryphon's right arm was enough to force the Unitrixes to disable themselves in the dub. In the original, Gryphon controlled their weapons to make them attack themselves offscreen.
- The two times Gryphon's Reckless Mode was mentioned were mistakenly translated as Demolition Mode. In the dub, the terms Reckless Mode and Crafty Mode are respectively called Action Mode and Demolition Mode, making Gryphon's Medachange an Action Mode.
- Dr. Maizu's mention that even the Tinpet will be destroyed if hit by Gryphon's Destroy attack without the limiter was omitted, being simplified as the opponent being completely destroyed.
- Like previous episodes, the Medanetboard's ring changed.
- Kam's message to Zuru, 新型のデスメダロットと勝負しよう。ドブロクニュータウンの建設現場で待っている。コクリュウ ("Match against a new Death Medarot. Waiting at construction site in Doburoku New Town. - Kokuryuu"), was changed to "Dear Zuru\Mystery Medafighter: I summon you to a robattle with my new Kilobot", omitting the location of the match.
- The screen transition from Nae's workshop to Extreme Tech changed, shortening the beginning of the latter a little bit.
- The screen showing Nae's message to Dr. Maizu was replaced by an earlier scene with Dr. Maizu blinking, only keeping Nae's voice. The message also changed, omitting the location and Nae's full name. In the original, her message is ユウヅルくんのことでお話があります。午後4時ドブロニュータウンの建設現場に来て下さい。 アキハバラ ナエ ("I'd like to talk to you about Yuuzuru-kun. Please come to the construction site in Doburoku New Town at 4 p.m.. - Nae Akihabara"). In the dub, her message is "Dear Dr. Maizu, there is something I need to talk to you about concerning your son. I hope that you will come meet me. I've attached directions. - Miss Nae". The message was also removed when it reappeared while Dr, Maizu was thinking about it.
- After the eyecatch in the middle of the episode, a few of the scenes with Zuru going down the stairs and talking with Ikki were either cut or shortened.
- The signs in the construction site's entrance, 工事中 and 本日作業休業中, were respectively translated as "under construction" and "this site is partially closed until further notice".
- The beginning of the scene where Kam summons Gryphon was cut, with his line about having spectators being moved to the previous scene, which was silent.
- Ginkai's reaction to seeing Gryphon was cut. His reaction is not as strong as Erika's, Ikki's, Metabee's, only finding it kinda creepy and not looking like it is strong.
- A short, silent scene was cut, with Gryphon's stats appearing on its place.
- In the original, Nae heard about a Kilobot whose development was discontinued due to its performance being too high to be considered safe for children, but it looked like a prototype was completed anyway. In the dub, Nae says: "Wait a minute, I recognize that Kilobot from some unpublished concept toy files developed by Extreme Tech. I thought that further development was likely to be cancelled because the performance grossly surpassed that of an average Kilobot. I guess that was a big juicy lie!"
- A few of the scenes shown after Dr. Maizu arrived in the construction site have small reductions to their duration.
- Like the error with Grain's Reckless Mode, Roks's Crafty Mode was mistakenly called Action Mode twice during the episode.
- A scene while Zuru is commanding his Medabots to Medachange was shortened a bit.
- The mention to Tyrelbeetle's Mighty Reckless Mode was omitted.
- An eyecatch was added after Nae talked with Dr. Maizu, also cutting Dr. Maizu's last line from the scene and repeating a scene with Kam afterwards.
- The beginning of the scene showing everyone surprised, one by one, by Tyrelbeetle's defeat was cut, with Metabee and Ikki being already present in the scene.
- In the dub, Roks asks Zuru why he wants to stop by asking about their commitment to defend Medabots by defeating Kilobots. In the original, Roks instead asks about their grudge against Kilobots.
- In the dub, Roks tells Zuru that they don't always have to win, but must always try. In the original, Roks says it does not matter if he does not win, he wants to at least try so they will have no regrets if they lose.
- In both cases, Dr. Maizu repeats what Roks said, but the scene was shortened, skipping to the flashback with Dr. Maizu remembering what he said to Zuru. In the original, Dr. Maizu is grateful for the lesson Roks taught him, and Nae asks if Dr. Maizu remembered the words he told to Zuru.
- As detailed in Mystery Medafighter Unmasked?, this episode's Japanese title means "Medabots are our friends", an important quote for Zuru that his father said years ago, appearing in several episodes. In the dubbed version of this episode, Dr. Maizu's words changed to "winning isn't everything" in the flashback and in the end of the episode.
- A scene with Kam after he released Gryphon's limiter was cut.
- In the original, Dr. Maizu is surprised that Kam was able to release Gryphon's limiter, while in the dub he simply does not like what Kam is doing.
- Dr. Maizu's line in the original implied that he did not expect a kid to be able to release a researcher's advanced limiter.
- After Kam tells Dr. Maizu to not worry, in the dub, Maizu calls Kam mad, and Kam asks why he is calling him mad, as he is the one who created Gryphon for him, asking if this is not what he wanted, while in the original, the doctor is worried with Roks, and Kam asks what is the problem, as Maizu was the one who wanted to create a Kilobot powerful enough to take down any opponent with one hit.
- After Gryphon's defeat, in the dub Dr. Maizu says that he will take Gryphon back away from Kam, while in the original he tells Kam that is what happens when you try using an unfinished product. In both, the doctor also says he now does not intend to complete Gryphon, a decision that left Kam disappointed in the dub, while he is indifferent in the original.
